A rich history
Coal mining has been a part of the Baralaba community for more than a century with the first mine being the state owned underground operation, the State Coal Mine. Production started at the mine in 1917. A second underground operation commenced to the north of the town in 1921. By 1924 more than 90 locals worked at the north mine producing 150 tonnes of coal per day, mainly to supply the boilers and smelters of the Mt Morgan gold mine. By comparison, the current Baralaba Coal mine employs more than 400 workers and produces almost 5,000 tonnes of coal per day.
